Female Urology

While urology is commonly thought of as a field of medicine primarily for men, mainly because of the prevalence of prostate health concerns, there are many urologic conditions that are affect women more often than men. Women who are facing a trip to the urologist often wonder what to expect and what treatments are available for them. Common female urologic conditions include:

Vesicovaginal Fistula: This is a condition wherein an opening connecting the bladder and the vagina is created, usually because of an injury or past medical procedure. The most common symptom is a constant leaking of urine.

Urethrovaginal Fistula: This is a condition that is caused when there is an opening between the vagina and urethra. The most common symptom is urinary incontinence.

Urethral Diverticulum: This is a condition wherein a woman has a pouch in the floor of the urethra. Common symptoms include regular urinary tract infections, discomfort during intercourse, or urine leakage.

Urethral Caruncle: This condition involves a small benign growth on the urethral opening, which can cause bleeding, discomfort during intercourse, and painful urination.

Urinary Tract Infections: While many women have an occasional urinary tract infection, recurrent infections usually indicate a more serious problem and require detailed testing to determine the cause. While treatment for a urinary tract infection is simple, finding the underlying cause is important to keep the infections from coming back.

Understanding these conditions and the potential treatments available to female urology patients will help each woman make the most informed decisions about her health. All treatments should be discussed in detail with a qualified medical professional.
