Self Catheterization

Instructions for Girls

  1. Assemble equipment and place in an accessible area. Equipment needed includes: catheter, water soluble lubricant (optional), and cotton balls soaked with soapy water. Inspect catheter before use. Do not use product if device or product is damaged.
  2. Wash hands with soap and water.
  3. Position your daughter as comfortably as possible, either lying down with knees bent in a "frog-like" position, or sitting with legs spread apart.
  4. Lubricant is optional. If it is used, lubricate the catheter end that will enter the urethra. Use only a water soluble lubricant. Lubricate the tip and up the catheter approximately 2".
  5. Spread the labia with the left thumb and forefinger and locate the urethra.
  6. Wash the labia several times with the cotton balls soaked with water and a mild soap. Be sure to wash from front to back and never go back and forth across the urethral opening. Use each cotton ball once and discard.
  7. Insert the catheter gently into the urethra until urine begins to flow; continue to insert the catheter a little further (approximately 1/2 inch).
  8. When urine stops, slowly begin to withdraw the catheter. As you withdraw it, stop each time more urine drains out. Check the color, odor and clarity of the urine to be aware of any changes that you may need to report to your doctor or nurse.
  9. Never reuse a catheter that appears rough, stiff, worn, discolored, or damaged in any way.
